TO-DO lists can be overwhelming - they are often filled with tasks you don't want to do. Whether those tasks are "gross", "tedious", "boring", or "just too much" for your mind and body when you are sad, sore, tired, or ill, I am happy to help you clean, organize, and sort!
I enjoy helping! I enjoy forming connections with everyone I meet! I am cheery and enthusiastic while performing tasks that many would find tedious. I can work for you or with you - to get those TO-DO lists dealt with!
Your satisfaction with what gets accomplished is paramount! I want you to feel good after a visit. I want to feel good too - being helpful does that.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed” is a proverbial reference to kindness and friendship. A person who is there for you, when you are in need, is a true friend.
It can also be interpreted that I, Eleanor, am in need of your TO-DO lists! The work I do, who I do it for, and the flexibility of my schedule allow me to be there for myself and those I care about in times of need.
I have Type 1 Autism. I am intelligent but sometimes have difficulty understanding others. It takes time for me to process social interaction and what is expected of me. I will ask for clarification and detail - not because you haven’t explained well, but because I have to ensure I understand you. I do not recognize non-verbal communication very well. Subtlety is lost on me so I need to ask questions.
I have to know you or the person who referred you. Word of mouth is the way I do things but having a mutual friend is essential for me.
I will be open about myself but I do not expect you to share in any way, give advice, or feel my feelings with me. If you would prefer to "just talk turkey", please say so. I won't realize I am making you uncomfortable if you don't tell me.
Do you have TOO MUCH STUFF but don't know where to start? Sometimes all you need is someone to listen, encourage, and be there to sort items with. Culling is very freeing - it gives you more space and peace. I can also transport items to donation centers, friends’ houses, and transfer stations.
Are you moving in or out and want your space sparkling? That is a lot of work and I am happy to do some or all of it!
Feeling tired and need a rest but your exuberant pup/child needs exercise? Outdoor fun with Eleanor!
Spring or fall clean-up, periodic maintenance, weeding, and even dealing with dog turds!
Animals and plants do well in my care and I enjoy tending them! House and pet-sitting is not subject to my usual $25/hour rate, for obvious reasons. A mutually-agreed upon daily rate will apply.
Prepping for and/or painting (dusting, cleaning, scuffing, face plates, painters’ tape, floor and furnishing protection, primer, paint, clean-up)
I can take albums full of photos (physical and digital) and create a slideshow of the highlights. These collections make meaningful gifts, especially if you include a digital picture frame to display them. A folder of great photos can be shared with friends/family and used as screensavers and backgrounds.
Not many people enjoy cleaning out rotten lettuce-juice from vegetable crispers and milk that spilled three months ago - but I do! The grosser the better! Really!
Caring for orchids is a passion of mine and it is in my blood: My grandmother had orchids and so did my mother. Phalaenopsis orchids (the most common household orchid genus) can literally live forever if cared for properly. Instead of tossing an orchid once it has finished blooming, I can teach you how to keep it thriving and blooming for YEARS. I also work with Cymbidium, Cattleya, and Paphiopedilum orchids. See my photo section for some of my orchids.
I have rarely said no to a request. If I feel I do not have the proper experience or training to do a task, I will decline. I will be honest about my abilities, experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. In general, I will do anything legal and safe in order to help you out!
The "off" seasons are my favourite times to be in Go Home Bay. I am happy to make your first or last weekend easier by dealing with shutters, spring/fall cleaning, and stocking/emptying the fridge and pantry so you have less to haul up or down.
My cottage has a marine railway. I can make your boat look its best, inside and out, whether it be a canoe, rowboat, run-about, sailboat, or "big boat". I will clean it with your preferred products or my special boat-cleaning tool kit!
Have you ever wondered what plants grow on your property and whether they are native or introduced? Do you see and hear birds every day but struggle to learn who is who? Do your children love bugs, frogs, turtles, or snakes? Let's go for a tour! We can make a list of the organisms that share your space and take steps to encourage (or discourage) them to stay!
*** Rattlesnake-related visits are ALWAYS free. I will drop everything to make sure you, your family, and the snakes are safe.
In combination with a nature tour or on its own - I can create a pdf of the organisms that share your special place, how to recognize them, and in what seasons they are most noticeable.
I take cash and e-transfer on the day of service* (see FAAQ)
I am in Toronto and in Go Home Bay. I will travel to help you, within reason. For instance, I will not travel to Guelph from Toronto to clean up a garden for three hours, but would travel that far to house- or dog-sit for a weekend. In Go Home Bay, I am happy to go anywhere within 30min in a small outboard (i.e. Cognashene to the south and Wah Wah Tay-See to the north).
The "spectrum" of Autism Spectrum Disorder is just that - a spectrum for AUTISTICS, not the population as a whole. No one "looks" or "acts" Autistic - we all deal with the world in different ways. Some Autistics do not speak, others are very verbal (like me). Some need a lot of support, some have lower support needs. I have Type 1 Autism but have spent my whole life unknowingly trying to hide it. This often happens with Autistic children (it is called masking), because, from a very young age, we don't like the reactions we get when we behave neuro-divergently. High-masking autism is especially common in women and girls because they have a strong urge to fit in.
I am trying to unmask now, and that means dealing with overstimulation as it occurs instead of trying to hide it (which results in exhaustion, depression, and anxiety). The world is a very loud, distracting place for those of us with Autism and we, as individuals, each deal with this overwhelming world in different ways. I rock back and forth on my feet or while sitting. I often pace. My hands almost always need to be fiddling.
I do not recognize people by their faces because I have prosopagnosia (aka face blindness). I use context, voice, gait, associations with other people, and special features (like distinctive eye-glasses or hair styles). I may not recognize you when we next meet - but I will always remember you if you simply say "Hi Eleanor, it's So-and-So". If I see someone who looks familiar in some way, I often ask them "Is that you, So-and-So?". I am often wrong!
YES. I am late-diagnosed and have been struggling my whole life to feel like one of you (i.e. a human). Now that I know why I feel like an alien, I am happy to display that alienness and celebrate it. I enjoy open conversations about autism and the truths and stereotypes linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder.
My life-long special interest is natural history (the plants and animals that share our world, especially the flora and fauna of Georgian Bay). If you want to know the bird that is singing in the tree outside your window, I can tell you about the bird, but also the tree species in which it sits, the plants growing at the tree's base, and the insects visiting the flowers.
The answer is Autism.
Not only do I feel instantly anxious when I hear my phone ring, I find it very hard to concentrate on what anyone says to me over the phone: There are too many sounds, feelings, and thoughts getting in the way of my concentration. Texts, emails, and in-person chats are easier for my brain to process. This being said, I will answer the phone if I recognize the number and have an inkling as to why you are calling.
The answer is Autism.
A. I have dyscalculia (like dyslexia but for numbers), so getting my pay immediately helps me keep track.
B. Everything in my life is more important than money - health, family, friends, experiences, learning, memories, places, the diversity and beauty of life - but I grudgingly recognize that I need money to exist. In a different world I would not ask for payment - that is how much I enjoy helping and cleaning.
C. If I do not discuss and agree upon my payment with you in the moment, I will subsequently undervalue my time and effort and charge less than I should. I am happy to provide detailed invoices for your records, but payment always comes first.
Budgies are the best!
The skilled, often delicate, operation of cranes and other Big Machines BLOWS my mind.
